…for Alto Flute, Bass Clarinet, and Bari Sax
“Bokuto” is the Japanese word for wooden training swords…this piece, however, has nothing to do with that. Named after the onomatopoeic sounds of the first three notes, this trio for alto flute, bass clarinet, and bari sax is all about relentless rhythmic drive. Going through many different motions, the piece weaves in and out of polytonality as it plays with the three note “bo-ku-to” pattern rigidly dispersed among the trio. Without many breaks in sound, the piece requires skilled, deft musicians to precisely pull off this demanding work.
